Meet our very special 'U Group' of Chihuahuas. These kids came from very, very hard times in KY. Thankfully, caring rescue workers there stepped in and saved these little ones from an awful neglect situation. All of these kids are doing GREAT now thanks to the dedication and tireless efforts of our KY rescue friends. These kids have been fully vetted (in both KY and by our vet here), and they are ready to go to loving forever homes. As for Miss Uraina Heidi, of the 4 in this group, this little cuddle bug looks like she is a mix of Chi and Mini Pinscher. She is a little longer legged and weighs about a pound more than everyone else. ... (Read More)She is also a little less sure of herself when put in unfamiliar situations, but warms up very quickly. She seems to be more protective of her foster mom than the others, and also loves to snuggle and cuddle. Of the 4, Uraina Heidi's coat has grown in the quickest in recovering from sarcoptic mange. She still has some spots where the hair is growing more slowly, but that's to be expected. She is a very beautiful young lady, alert, playful, and and overall wonderful little dog. She is also spayed, heartworm negative, and up-to-date on shots. For all of these babies, due to their small size, we are seeking homes without young children (children under 10). They would also do well in a home with an older couple who wants a small, lap-dog companion. Any of these kids would do well as an only dog or in a home with other dogs. Currently, they are being fosterd in a home with several dogs in the 40-lb range, and they are doing great. If you have the time, willingness and ability to commit to Uraina Heidi (or another in the 'U Group') -- for her/his whole life, no matter what may lie ahead in yours -- please register on our website & complete an on-line adoption application. Once we receive that, a volunteer will be in touch to work with you through the review process. Our process is very straightforward but does involve a phone interview, reference checks and a home assessment. An adoption fee of $300 also applies. Finally, because these animals are fostered in our homes & we do not have a centralized facility, you must be approved for adoption prior to meeting the animals. Chihuahua Dogs can make good pets in New York if they match your IifestyIe. Chihuahuas are high strung, yappy, tiny dogs. Chihuahuas are loyal to the point of possessiveness and obsession with their masters. Chihuahuas are bold, high energy dogs that make wonderful companions for their owners but are suspicious of strangers. Chihuahuas are not well suited to families with children due to the dogs' defensiveness and tendency to snap when provoked. Chihuahuas need to be thoroughly socialized. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are often aggressive with other dogs. Chihuahuas do fine living in an apartment but need plenty of daily exercise.
