Rescue Me ID: 14-10-15-00375Roxie (female)

Chihuahua    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Needs to be Spayed, Needs Vaccinations

Little Roxie is a small 10-week-old female puppy that was confiscated from a meth house. She was terribly underweight when we got her but is plumping up now. Roxie had been starved, and because of that, she is a little bit food aggressive toward other dogs (but not people). She may have wound up food aggressive anyway, but her neglected, starved early life did not help. She is a sweet, loving little puppy toward people, and licks and happily greets everybody, and is full of that puppy energy. She loves other dogs and wants to play every waking minute. She can be a tough little playmate for her small size. Of course she is teething ... (Read More)and chewing so she will need to have her teething behavior channeled to the appropriate toys and puppy chew bones. Roxie weighs 5 pounds now and eats like a horse but will still be a small Chihuahua when grown. (maybe 8-10 pounds). She loves riding in a car; she never became sick. Roxie is crate trained. Roxie can be very feisty and energetic as many Chihuahuas are, but she has a very quiet and loving side, she loves being handled and loved, and will make an excellent pet if her new family will dedicate the time and attention needed to house-break her, give her play time and exercise, and make her into a fun and loving member of the family. Roxie is too small for young or energetic children. Her new family will need to be aware of their feet and where they are stepping AND sitting as Roxie is so small, she cannot always be seen and could be easily injured if stepped on or sat on. Roxie will need a very secure yard fence as her smallness makes her able to squeeze through most openings and gaps. Her new family will need to pay attention to her and work with her, and Roxie would love it if there is another dog to keep her company. But because she is an energetic puppy, some older dogs may not appreciate being pestered to play. Roxie quiets down quickly in her crate and goes to sleep (and sleeps all night long!). Roxie has had her first puppy shot. She will need a total of two more DHLP puppy vaccinations, one rabies shot AND eventually be spayed when she is 5-6 months old. To see our Miss Roxie, please call 575-537-3220 M-F between 8-4:30 and ask for the animal control officer or email hurleyanimalshelter@gmail.com (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-10-15-00368Spot (male)

Chihuahua    Age: Young Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Spot is a 5 mo old Chihuahua (terrier-mix?) male and he is current with his first two puppy vaccinations and will need his 3rd November 1st. Spot is a sweet, loving puppy that may mature to about 10 pounds (he is nearly 8 pounds now) and only about 8 inches tall at the shoulder. Like any puppy, Spot has lots of energy so his new family will have to be smart about giving him adequate attention and channeling his play into productive exercise time. Spot loves other dogs and he is a rough and ready little playmate. He LOVES riding in a car and is crate-trained (but not house trained yet). Spot is very loving and likes everyone he ... (Read More)meets. His coloring is very striking in person and when he trots, he prances throwing his little front legs out in front of him like a proud pony. He will make someone a lively and loving little pet. Spot does not get along with cats. His adoption fee is $35.00. Please call 575-537-3220 and ask for the animal control officer (M-F 8-4:30 pm) or email hurleyanimalsheler@gmail.com (Less)

Chihuahua    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi I am LaLa! I'm around 5 or 6 years old. I have been bounced around quite a bit in my short life. I was rescued out of a yard where my owners abandoned me and my other doggie buddies when the humans left. I don't know if I can even call them my owners they just left us to starve. I went to a temporary home with a very nice lady but there were many dogs like myself that had been abandoned and needed homes. She would let me sit in her lap, though, even if she didn't have much time for me. I enjoyed that very much. But then she found PACA to take me and I went in another foster home with a couple of other dogs. I really didn't like ... (Read More)sharing the human lap there with the other dogs as I finally had someone that would pay attention to me. One of the other dogs is very sickly and old and it was decided that I would move to another foster home. There are doggies in this home and they kind of put me in my place. I do like the lap of the man and don't want to share it with anybody. They would like to keep me but if they do then they cannot foster anymore dogs and this is what they want to do. So I am still looking for that forever home. Please consider me for yours. I would really like to have a lap to lay on all to myself and not share it with any other dogs. I am alright with kitties, though, they seem to do their own thing and I like watching them but leave them alone and they leave me alone. So as you can gather I am a lap dog and would make an excellent companion for someone in a quiet home. And I would really, really like to find my forever home, please! Rescue Me ID: 14-10-06-00010Cotton (male)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cotton is a little cutiepie. He is chihuahua mixed with what we are not too sure. I don't think he is too sure either as one ear wants to be a chihuahua and the other wants to be whatever he is mixed with. It is quite endearing, 1 ear up and 1 ear down. We think that he may be around 2 years old. He is good with dogs and enjoys playing with them. He and his buddy PeeWee, who is also looking for a home and is in the same foster home, play and hang out together and really enjoy each other. They would like to go to a home together but if not possible, Cotton would be ok in a home with another dog or dogs, or by himself as he really likes ... (Read More)to be a lapdog. He is a little bit shy at first but does warm up to you. He is good with kids but it takes a little time for him to warm up to them, as he is a little timid, but once he has he is very playful and excellent with them. He has possibly been abused so needs a little patience, he gets scared and cowers if voices are raised. He sleeps in his crate at night along with PeeWee. He is housebroken and does not mark. He likes attention and to have a warm lap to lay on. He is very well behaved and listens very well. His foster mommie says he is the best little guy and a joy to have around. Chihuahua Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

PeeWee is small, about a year old and very, very playful. He is very attached to his friend Cotton, who lives with him in his foster home. Cotton is also looking for a home. PeeWee needs another young playmate if Cotton and he cannot be adopted together. We prefer that they go together but realize that this may not be possible. PeeWee is very attentive but was very cautious when he first came to his foster home, it took him a couple of days to come round. He loves to play and chew on raw hides. He goes into his crate with Cotton at night. He is house broken but does best when he has access to outdoors and can go out every so often. ... (Read More)He will follow the other dogs out easily. He is good with kids when he becomes acquainted with them-he is a bit timid at first-but once he gets to know them he is very playful and is excellent with them. Rescue Me ID: 14-09-22-00120Cheech (male)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Cheech is a very sweet Chihuahua-mix with long legs, maybe rat terrier or Miniature Pinscher-mix? Cheech's whole body wiggles when he is glad to see you or just happy in general. He is about 10-11' high at the shoulder, neutered and vaccinated. Cheech had a very hard early life and he is only 7 months old!! Thank goodness we got him when we did. Cheech's previous owner kept him and his sister in a cage in the backyard where they didn't see anybody or anything. Both were nearly wild and starved when they were surrendered to us. Cheech was panicked at the sight of other humans; Cheech didn't know what being touched was about, he didn't ... (Read More)know what a leash was or what going for a walk was about. When he finally saw cars and people and other dogs while on walks; he seemed shocked. There was a whole new world out there! But Cheech has bloomed since coming to the shelter. He is a brave little dog and will make a devoted, loving little pet. Cheech now loves attention and playing with other dogs. Cheech is crate-trained, and he is fun to walk on a leash, and he likes riding in a car. However, Cheech does not like cats - he will harrass them to get them to run. We have never had him around children so we are not sure how he would do UNLESS it was a very quiet, gentle child. Also, Cheech can be a little bit food aggressive with other dogs (not people) which probably originated during the time he was starved. We are still putting weight on little Cheech and house-breaking him. He may always crouch a little bit when approached to be picked up but now he stands still and lets you handle him. And he may always be a little afraid when first meeting new people but may get over that with time, handling. Won't you please consider giving Cheech a gentle, loving home? He now WANTS to be loved and petted by people; he just needs more experience with them. He has come so far in the month we have had him. Cheech's adoption fee is $35.00. (Less)

Rosie came in with her son Deigo from the shelter. She had been breed on every heat cycle and was also pregnant when she came in.     Chihuahua Dogs can make good pets in New Mexico if they match your IifestyIe. Chihuahuas are high strung, yappy, tiny dogs. Chihuahuas are loyal to the point of possessiveness and obsession with their masters. Chihuahuas are bold, high energy dogs that make wonderful companions for their owners but are suspicious of strangers. Chihuahuas are not well suited to families with children due to the dogs' defensiveness and tendency to snap when provoked. Chihuahuas need to be thoroughly socialized. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are often aggressive with other dogs. Chihuahuas do fine living in an apartment but need plenty of daily exercise.
