Rescue Me ID: 14-09-22-00120Cheech (male)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Not Good w/ Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Little Cheech is a very sweet, loving and happy boy but came from very bad circumstances. The people who surrendered Cheech kept him in a cage in the backyard till he was 6 mos old. He was very thin when we got him, and terrified of all people and things. But because Cheech has such a good personality, and was young enough, he was better able to adjust to new surroundings and new people and ideas. Cheech has bloomed since coming to the shelter. I marked him as SPECIAL NEEDS because Cheech has a problem with meeting new people for the first time. He may always be a little afraid of new or strange people at first, but afterward, he ... (Read More)becomes more friendly. Another behavior Cheech has is he crouches down when someone reaches to pick him up - - an old fearful behavior from his younger days when he was bullied and yelled at. That crouching behavior may go away as he gets older and learns to trust new people. But because of little Cheech's rough start, his new person or family will have to be very patient and very gentle with him to bring out his trust. Cheech's new family will always need to use positive reinforcement, not punishment as he will revert back to his old fears from when he was a puppy. Once he gets over his initial shyness, he is a fun dog to have around and he is also a very loving and gentle dog. Cheech should not go to a noisy, very active home with rambunctious children. He is not used to that kind of environment and needs to be placed in a quieter home, and if there are children, they must be gentle or Cheech may have difficulty adjusting. Also Cheech has sensitive skin so during spring and fall, he may need to take a half of a Benadryl a.m. and p.m. to control his allergies. He may grow out of his allergies but grass and green weeds seem to aggravate them so it is preferable he spends less time outdoors if you have grass in your yard. (Benedryl is very cheap: $4 per box of 100 at Walmart.) Cheech loves other dogs and wants so badly to love people. He was born around March 2014, is about 10 inches tall at the shoulder and is a slim boy weighing about 10 pounds. Cheech is neutered and vaccinated. He loves walking on a leash now, loves to go for car rides, loves being cuddled. Cheech is crate-trained and housebroken and he uses a dog door. Please contact the animal control officer at 575-537-3220 M-F, 8-4:30 pm, or email hurleyanimalshelter@gmail.com to see little Cheech. His adoption fee is $40.00. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Chihuahua in New Mexico
Chihuahua Dogs can make good pets in New Mexico if they match your IifestyIe. Chihuahuas are high strung, yappy, tiny dogs. Chihuahuas are loyal to the point of possessiveness and obsession with their masters. Chihuahuas are bold, high energy dogs that make wonderful companions for their owners but are suspicious of strangers. Chihuahuas are not well suited to families with children due to the dogs' defensiveness and tendency to snap when provoked. Chihuahuas need to be thoroughly socialized. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are often aggressive with other dogs. Chihuahuas do fine living in an apartment but need plenty of daily exercise.
