If you are interested in adopting me: 1) Write down my Animal ID # . 2) Make sure to mention Animal ID # when visiting or calling. 3) Remember all adoptions stop 30 minutes prior to closing time. 3) You will not be allowed to place a hold on me. 4) I cannot be shipped to you. 5) Before adopting me, you can spend time with me outside or in a meet and greet room. Please ask for assistance. 6) We take cash, checks, debit cards, VISA and Mastercard as a method of payment. **IMPORTANT: Huntsville Animal Services cannot guarantee that I will still be available for adoption as we do not hold animals for anyone under any circumstances. Animals are adopted on a first come, first serve basis. You may want to call and ask if I am still available prior to visiting the shelter. When you adopt me, I will stay at the shelter and be taken to the veterinarian of your choice where I will be spayed or neutered before going to my new home. If I am already spayed or neutered, I can go home with you upon adoption. My adoption cost is very affordable and includes my adoption fee, spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, license (if you live within Huntsville city limits), a collar and personalized ID tag. Please know that a high percentage of animals in the shelter are brought in as strays. It is impossible to know anything about a stray animal and many times we can only make our best educated guess on breeds, age, etc. Every animal you see posted here has passed a general temperament test as performed by shelter staff and it is considered to be non-aggressive. ADOPTION FEES Dogs: $80 - 170 - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention; purebred dogs and puppies tend to cost more and dogs that have been in the shelter longer will probably cost less. Cats: The shelter is currently running a $35 special on cats. (regularly $80) - includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, feline aids/leukemia testing, rabies voucher, deworming, *heart worm and flea/tick prevention LICENSE FEES $10 - 1 year license $35 - Lifetime license EVERY ADOPTER RESIDING IN THE CITY OF HUNTSVILLE, AL WILL BE REQUIRED TO PURCHASE ONE OF THE ABOVE LICENSE OPTIONS AT TIME OF ADOPTION OPTIONAL SERVICES $10 - Heartworm test. Blood test known as the 'snap test' that shows when heart worm antigens are present in the blood. $20 - Microchip. Another line of defense to help you get your pet back in the event he/she is lost. This is especially recommended for those pets known to climb fences, chew collars/tags, etc. Start your new pup out right by gentle training and socialization. If you confront a behavior problem you are not sure what to do about, Laurel Rose is a dog trainer in Huntsville who has offered to meet with people who adopt dogs from the Huntsville Animal Shelter for a free evaluation. Phone is: (256) 890-1234. 'Pit bull mixes': Pit bull mixes get a bad rap. First of all, the American Pit bull is different from other bull dog breeds and yet they are typically lumped together. Many are actually American bulldogs, American Staffordshire terriers, boxer mixes, etc. And what percentage of pit bull traits gets a dog declared to be pit bull over whatever other breed he might be mixed with? But more importantly, the pit bull is more typically sweet natured and friendly when trained and socialized correctly. Please do not be turned off if a dog that appeals to you is labeled 'pit bull mix'. Come meet it. You will probably be pleasantly surprised and may consider adopting one of the most difficult dogs to find a home for, due to no fault of its own. Whatever dog you bring in to the family, all of the people need to be the pack leaders, whether adults or children. Follow this rule from day one, and no matter what dog you adopt, you'll have an enjoyable experience. Pit mixes are typically strong and focused and will require regular exercise. A 'power breed waiver' may be required stating that you acknowledge that this dog will be strong and/or large and may need appropriate training and handling. (Less)

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

The last one of the owner surrender trio is Gizmo. Gizmo is a 9 year old neutered, micro-chipped and heart worm negative boy. Gizmo is a very sweet vocal boy and weighs about 5 pounds. He loves to talk and sing to you lol. Gizmo gets along with other dogs and ignores my cats but is a bit protective of his space. That will probably pass once he has a chance to get used to the change of living arrangements. He is missing a couple of teeth but has no problem eating dry food and has no breath odor that would suggest dental problems. We will have to get that checked. He walks well on a leash and likes to hang out the window on car rides. Lol. ... (Read More)Gizmo would probably do best in an adult home where he can be a lap dog. Animal ID: 156426Candy (female)

Chihuahua Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Health: Vaccinations Current

This grand lady needs an open-hearted soul who would take care of her for her senior years. She was turned in because her owner had to go to a nursing home. Another dog, Misty, was also her pet so it would be really wonderful if they were adopted together. Both dogs are fearful and anxious here in the shelter and may take a little time to become secure in a new setting. She may already be housebroken and trained and would be a good candidate for someone who would enjoy a slightly more mature companion. Come meet them and judge for yourself.     This tiny little guy is so super sweet but still very cautious. He can be very timid but its no wonder since he was in the shelter and scared. He is learning that not all humans are mean and cruel. He has made good progress with integrating himself with the other dogs in his foster home. He would do best in a quiet home where there is not a lot of activity. He will need someone who will be understanding of the his life before rescue and will show him patience as he learns a new way of living and to trust. This little guy deserves a loving home where he can feel safe and be loved.

He is a very bright and wee little older fellow. He loves to chase squirrels and birds and such with reckless abandon so a fenced yard is a must. PIease Read Before Adopting a Chihuahua in Alabama
Chihuahua Dogs can make good pets in Alabama if they match your IifestyIe. Chihuahuas are high strung, yappy, tiny dogs. Chihuahuas are loyal to the point of possessiveness and obsession with their masters. Chihuahuas are bold, high energy dogs that make wonderful companions for their owners but are suspicious of strangers. Chihuahuas are not well suited to families with children due to the dogs' defensiveness and tendency to snap when provoked. Chihuahuas need to be thoroughly socialized. Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are often aggressive with other dogs. Chihuahuas do fine living in an apartment but need plenty of daily exercise.
